The question of the Art in building
Critical Architecture
The question of the Art in building
The correlation between architecture and culture
The
correlation between architecture and culture
In this assignment I will figure out
if there is any correlation between the buildings and elevations across
cultures. First, what is the main goal from designing and
making the buildings? “Architects are designing to achieve what people need.
People need places in their houses to eat and sleep, they also need places to
receive their guests”. In Arabic culture, people should have two guest rooms
for male and female visitors because they cannot stay with each other unless
women wear a veil (Hijap). In particular, Islamic people use covers on windows
for privacy reasons to block the view from walking street and the wood covering
is called “Mashrabia”. It was used for approximately 40 years more than it is
used now, but it still exists nowadays. Other uses for Mashrabiah were for
people who lived in the house to keep the water earthen pot inside the
Mashrabiah cold. In general, culture influences are appearing through Islamic
architecture. The Mashrabiah and the separation between male and female guest
rooms are good examples. In addition, building design reflects the elevation
design. For example, architects in Saudi Arabia design small and private
windows in buildings to provide more privacy for the females in the house. From
the examples I mentioned above, there is a strong positive correlation between
design and culture because architects are designing what people need based on
their culture.
